I grew up around filmmaking when my dad, Geoff Murphy, started making films in the 60's and 70's. As a grown up, I’ve worked in the New Zealand film and television industry since the 80’s. Over the decades I’ve crewed in the art department, worked for many years as an assistant director, and have location scouted and managed numerous feature films and TV productions. Projects range from early features such as Goodbye Pork Pie, Once Were Warriors, and later The Lord of the Rings trilogy, King Kong and The Breaker Upperers. I’ve location managed on a diverse range of features and TV shows such as Outrageous Fortune, Power Rangers, Guns Akimbo, The Gone, After The Party, War Machine, Big Girls Don’t Cry and Secrets At Red Rocks.
Since the early 2000’s, I’ve juggled my freelance work with developing and producing short films, feature films and web series.
In 2015 I started collaborating with writer/director/producer Ness Simons and we produced a number of projects, including 2 seasons of the multi award winning web series Pot Luck. In 2019/2020 we we post-produced and self-distributed Bea Joblin’s indie feature film Births, Deaths and Marriages (NZIFF 2019) into NZ cinemas before, and after, the first Covid-19 lockdown. We’re currently working together on nurturing emerging talent with Jane Ballentyne’s 2025 short film The Worth of Things screening in multiple international film festivals, and writer Henrietta Bollinger who’s in development with their first short film.
I’ve co-produced two other feature films Lowdown Dirty Criminals and PUNCH which were released in Aotearoa (New Zealand) and internationally, in 2020 and 2022 respectively.
Although busy developing and producing projects of passion, I’m still actively working as a free lance Location Manager in the New Zealand film industry. A link to my IMDB profile is at top of the page, and a full CV is below.
